I made this coffee filter wreath a couple of years back and although I have loved it, it was time for a change. My mom requested a coffee filter wreath for her bedroom and I thought there was no time like the present to give mine up and make something new and fabulous for my gallery stairwell. I found this brass ring at our local dollar store for $3.50 and I have a massive stockpile of fake flowers that I have picked up over the last few years (all of the ones I used in this wreath came from Value Village, score!!) So this ended up being an extremely inexpensive and quick wreath to make but I love the look it provides to our stairwell. Spring appears to be firmly here, so I’m all about the florals at the moment!
They have these brass rings in lots of different sizes at the dollar store, and I still have to come up with uses for some of the smaller ones but the large one worked really well for this wreath. I just made sure to put the leaves and flowers over the seam where the ring was joined.
I started by hot-gluing some leaves onto the wreath. I knew I wanted lots of the brass ring to show, so I chose to only cover about 1/3 of it with the leaves/flowers. A new glue gun is one of the things on my shopping list, I have 2 of these, and they are terrible. They get so hot that I have to unplug them every 10 minutes for a while otherwise they actual burn the glue. I am constantly burning myself with this glue gun, but I never remember to buy a new one when i’m out and about so I guess it’s better than nothing.
After I had enough leaves I glued a couple of larger flowers. I love these flowers, they have burlap in them and are just perfectly rustic enough for me.
And, of course, I had to add some pink flowers. It just wouldn’t be something I made if it didn’t have pink in it. But I kept it rustic looking with some dusty pink flowers instead of something bright.
Using a glue gun is so fast but it always leaves the little glue strings behind. Over the years, I have tried several methods to get rid of them, someone once told me that if I kept the glue sticks in the freezer it wouldn’t do that, but I don’t find that very convenient so I just run my blow dryer on a hot setting over the whole things and they shrink right up! So quick and easy!
I had intended to make an easter wreath today for our front door but I had already used all of my wreath forms and I didn’t think to pick one up when I was at the store, so instead, I made this floral wallhanging. Easter wreath will have to be Friday’s project…stay tuned!
When we built our current home we knew it was going to be a short term home for us. A stepping stone. A practice run. Rex has built many many homes but this is the first home I have been a part of. This is the first home I’ve had that I didn’t rent. It might be official. I might be an adult?!?! Wait!! That doesn’t sound right?! I’m only 36, I can’t possibly be an adult yet! Right?
Being a short time house we designed everything in this house to be easily saleable. Neutral color palettes (although that’s my usual choice anyway), nothing fancy, something that will suit every style. I feel like we did a good job with that but I made sure to leave my stamp on it. I love pretty things, I love personal touches, I truly love our home. I’m going to share with you ways that we personalized our home without sacrificing that saleability we needed.
Our living room in this home is quite small, there are only 3 of us, and although the living room is the most used room in our house, it suits us just fine. We have a couch, a coffee table, and a media stand. What more do we need? Despite it’s small space it was lacking in any sort of style. I couldn’t figure out what I could do to make it beautiful. I tried hanging pictures on the walls, I tried adding some décor to the media stands, I outfitted the couch with nice pillows and blankets, but still it was missing something. One afternoon we were catching up on some Fixer Upper and the sun was shining through the window and making it difficult to see the “dream team” of Chip and Joanna so we starting talking about putting up a set of curtains. Then suddenly it dawned on me. Barn doors! We’d seen Joanna do it on one of their flips. Barn doors over the window in place of curtains! We talked about whether we would order doors, or make them. It’s easier to just order doors but there are 2 electrical outlets on that wall and they wouldn’t be usable if we had full length doors so we decided we would make some short ones. After a few weekends at the shop we had some beautiful shortie barn doors. I heavily distressed them then stained them in a beautiful English Chestnut finish. After the very painful 48 hours of waiting for the stain to dry, we hung them with some barn door track that Rex had purchased through the store. And I’m telling you, I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. They add so much personality, so much style, and so much function to our living room! We won’t take them with us when we move as they were custom built for this house, but there will definitely be more barn door building in my future!
Another thing we did in this house that I will be repeating in the next house is the homemade wood countertop in my kitchen. In my original plan I wanted all of my countertops to be wood, but we had such a short timespan that it was faster to order countertops for the majority of the kitchen and we made the wood counter for just one side. In hindsight, I am happy it worked out this way as I think the combination of the beautiful white fake carerra marble and the richness that the wood counter offers is a great combination. Wood counters definitely need maintenance, I oil the countertop on the last day of every month while Rex is doing the month end for the store, but in my opinion, the maintenance is totally worth it.
When we were working on the railing for our stairs, our friend Ernie, who was helping us with some of the finish work, suggested that we should have a shabby looking newel post. We had so many other rustic elements in our home that a flawless newel just didn’t fit right. And I’m so grateful for his suggestion. I think our shabby newel just lends that special personalized touch to this home that makes it so much more than just a builder-grade home.
In our bathroom (and our bedroom) we opted to put tongue and groove pine on the walls that we painted instead of just plain drywall. It lends a shiplap-esk style to those rooms and I love it! With the texture of the boards I didn’t feel the need to hang lots of pictures, they look nice just as they are. When it came to picking a towel rack for our bathroom I scoured and scoured and couldn’t find anything that fit with the theme of the house until one day we were in Burns Lake at an amazing antique store I love to frequent. I came across this chair back that had a brace rail across the bottom and it just hit me, “That would make an amazing towel rack!”. And it does. It adds a little farmhouse style to our bathroom and if the future owners don’t like it, it’s easy to change!
The only room in our home that we didn’t design with the future owners in mind was Maddie’s room. She was 6 when we moved into this house and we wanted her room to be something special just for her. After throwing ideas around in my head for weeks I settled on a feature bird wall! I ordered stencils online and late one night during the painting phase I got to work. I used tape for the lines, then I had some fun with some bright colors for the birds. She loves her room and it was really easy and fast to do! Unless we get lucky and find buyers who also have a little girl, I’m sure the birds will be one of the first things that gets changed after we move, but it was worth it for the last 18 months of enjoyment Maddie got out of them!
When all else fails, add some beautiful flowers in some unusual vases and every room instantly looks better! We brought these hydrangeas home from the Chamber of Commerce Business Awards that we attended last night. They are one of my favorite flowers and I am so hopeful that the 3 hydrangea plants that I planted last year come back after the strange winter we had! Flowers also make everything better!
“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens…”
I have seen The Sound of Music dozens of times. It’s a classic. It’s one of those movies that never goes out of style. And for the last few weeks I have had this song in my head. Julie Andrews singing this song in her bedroom surrounded by the Von Trapp children is such an amazing scene you can’t help but love it.
I love musicals, and I’m working hard to try and instill that same love into Maddie. We are both always singing about something, and if we’re not singing, we’re humming. Growing up I can remember going into a store and my mom would start humming or singing and I used to think it was really embarrassing, but now, I totally find myself doing it too. At the tender age of 7 Maddie is still happy for me to sing to her in public, but another few years and I’m sure she’ll feel the same way I felt about my mom 20+ years ago.
And then one day she will go to the store with her child and she will start singing without even thinking about it.
It’s inevitable.
So I thought I would do a post about a few of my favorite things while I sing about Julie Andrews’.
I am often considered a bit of a mystery as I am like two different people all rolled into one sweet (somedays!) package! I have an extremely girly side, with pink hair, girly mugs, and kitchy little notebooks on every counter, and then I have the woodshop side, bandana wrapped around my head, hands covered in wood glue and stain, and sawdust in every conceivable crevice.
I will go through a favorite shop tools post when I get a chance to get some shop time and take some pictures of my favs, but in the meantime, I am going to do a post about my favorite things outside of the shop!
Mugs… *sigh* mugs, glorious mugs…all the mugs…all the time…
I know I’m not alone in my obsession with adorable mugs. I know several of my friends have the same problem. It doesn’t seem to matter which store I am in, I can find a mug to buy. I have mugs for each season and rotate the ones on display every few months. I have bought several for Rex over the years but tragically, they never make it out to the display. I occasionally feel guilty about displaying only the cutest mugs, but lets face it, isn’t that what girls do? Or is that just me?
I like to sprinkle different decor around the house for each season and holiday. I have boxes and boxes of decorating items that I haul around with us through every move, and the stash grows considerable every year. Thankfully this next move should be our last! Spring is my favorite decorating season. As soon as the Christmas decorations get tucked away for the year I start bringing out the pastels and flowers. There’s something about a bouquet of pink peonies that just makes me smile just a little bit brighter.
I’d like to say that my collection is solely coffee and tea mugs but I’d be lying to you. My travel mug collection is also WAY out of hand. I saw a brilliant idea on Pinterest of using a hanging shoe holder to corral your travel mugs and let me tell you, it works so well! You know, other than the fact that it’s always overflowing and most of the “shoe” spots have multiple mugs in them. Seriously, I could probably talk about mugs for days.
But I won’t.
A notebook for everything…
I have so many notebooks, seriously, at any given point, you can look around the living space in my house and see at least 3. If they would stop making such cute ones, I would stop buying them, but until then, our house will be overrun with notebooks. Most of them only have writing on one or two pages, a few have been around for years and have a little more use but more often than not, they are simply here for decoration (and to jot the occasional grocery list on). The only problem with having so many is that I know I’ve written something important down somewhere, on a random page, in a random book….
And one day I will find it.
They call me Pinkie-Pie…
Now, in case nobody was paying attention, I LOVE PINK. I repeat, I LOVE PINK. Back in my previous life as a vet tech my stethoscope was pink, my gumboots were pink, if I could have found pink overalls, I would have worn them. Sometime in the last few months, I decided I was brave enough to try to pull off pink hair. And that is one of my favorite decisions in the last 6 months. I adore my pink hair, and I will really struggle to go back to normal hair someday. My mother-in-law doesn’t understand why I would ever dye my hair, she loves my natural color, but I am one of those people who just craves change. This bubblegum-cotton candy-strawberry ice cream pink thing that’s going on at the moment is the most amazing color. I am madly in love with my hair. I have the worlds most patient and accommodating hairdresser and she never disappoints. Even now, it’s 8 days since my last color and it’s starting to fade (as pastel colors always do) and she is helping me come up with a maintenance plan. I’m hoping we can get enough experimenting under our belts that I can do a post on how I keep my pink pink.
I could go on and on and on about so many incredible things that make my life easier, the amazing people that make my life more fun, but I wanted to just do a fun, lighthearted post about the 3 little things that never fail to make me smile!
I received my Spring 2017 Fabfitfun box in the mail the other day. I have been seeing all of these unboxing videos and thought to my self “Self (cause that’s what I call myself!)! I should make an unboxing video as well!” So I did!
I had so much fun doing it that I decided to start a youtube channel under the same name as this blog; Stilettos and Sawdust! Everyone do me a favour and head over there and subscribe to my channel and let me know what you think of the videos I have already made. If anyone has any suggestions on videos they would like to see in the future, please, let me know and I’ll do my best to oblige!
I thought I should review my Spring Fabfitfun box and let you all know what’s in it if you haven’t had a chance to check out the video yet.
I’ve been subscribing to Fabfitfun for the last 2+ years and in each box there are some amazing products that I can’t wait to use, and there is usually at least 1 product that I don’t really have a use for. BUT. This Spring 2017 box was different! There isn’t a single product in it that I won’t use (other than the Boho Roundie but I am sending that to my Boho Hippie Step-daughter!) This box contains over $360 worth of products! That is amazing! Fabfitfun boxes contain full sized samples and they are always products I have never seen or even heard of before. There are lots of skin care products that I have never tried and wouldn’t likely purchase on my own, so being able to try them in this box is amazing! Seriously, who knew facial peels where actually a real thing? All right, that’s not really fair, I knew they were a real thing, I just thought people came out of them looking like creatures from the black lagoon, but they are quite gentle and leave you with the softest smoothest skin!
They always advertise that it’s a fitness subscription box which I think is really inaccurate. This box contained a card for their new Fabfitfun TV workout system which is just workout videos that subscribers can use for no extra cost. The last box didn’t even have anything fitness related in it. In the past I have received a strap for my yoga mat, a towel for my yoga mat, and a resistance band (all in different boxes). I really don’t think it’s fair to call it a “fitness subscription” but I love it all the same.
The last few boxes have had some pretty beautiful pieces of jewelry, this Spring box had an amazing bangle bracelet that I LOVE, the last one had a necklace, I think the one before that had a necklace also. They are usually tasteful pieces that are well made.
I have never had any complaints about the Fabfitfun boxes, I think they are filled with useful products and it’s an amazing deal! If anyone has any questions about the boxes, or are thinking about getting themselves a subscription, don’t forget to let them know that I sent you!
HI! Welcome to my blog! I’m going to start this thing with an introduction to who I am, how I got to be here, and what you can expect in the future.
My name is Kelly, I am 36 years old and I was lucky enough to grow up on a farm in Vanderhoof, BC. I knew what I wanted as a career when I was in Grade 6. I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that I was going to be a Veterinary Technician. I got my diploma from Lakeland College in Alberta in 2003, and have spent the last 13 years working in veterinary clinics throughout BC. I have loved my career, and I like to think I was really good at it. But this last year, something changed. I was still enjoying my work, I was still rocking it, but I was starting to feel like something was missing. I wasn’t as happy as I knew I could be. I was feeling lost. I am engaged to a man who makes all other men look like duds. I have a daughter who is the most amazing creature I have ever met. I have 2 adult-ish almost-step-children (that’s a mouthful…) who keep me on my toes. I have a beautiful home, a quirky little dog, an incredible extended family…..well, you get it….I have it all. But still something was missing.
So, I did the only thing I could think of to get out of my rut, I quit my job.
I had grand ideas when I gave my notice of opening my own store. There was a local business up for sale that had been presented to me and a friend, and we were seriously considering it. We went through the books, we made a plan for what our store would look like, we had it all figured out, but still something didn’t feel quite right. Her plans for life changed and they were looking at a pretty big move in the near future so she backed out of the project. Upon reflection my idea of what I wanted in a store just seemed so different from what was being offered that it seemed to make more sense just to start from scratch with a new location, and an entirely new store. I found a location, I made a list of potential vendors, I even made a business plan. I met with a local group dedicated to helping entrepreneurs succeed. But still something didn’t feel quite right. I was excited about the idea of opening my own store but I wasn’t 100% certain that is what I wanted. I was enjoying some time off of work, enjoying having the time to spend with my aging grandparents, enjoying spending some time with my mom who had recently retired, enjoying volunteering at my daughters school every other week, I was just enjoying being me.
I had started puttering around in my inlaws’ wood shop a few years ago with my boyfriend. We built a few things for ourselves, our biggest project being our dining table. He owns a building supply store in town and over the years had been collecting interesting wood and salvaging things that came his way. He had a stash of some worm wood that had been delivered to the store years ago (like, we are talking 20 years ago, the man accuses me of being a hoarder but……. 😉 ). All of the holes and character in the worm wood instantly drew me to it. There wasn’t enough for an entire dining table, but there was enough for a center panel for a table! Our beautiful dining table was our first large project, and in a wood shop, there is a STEEP learning curve. We had this table built and dismantled completely 3 times over the course of 2 years. Yes, you read that right, 2 YEARS! We can’t ever part with this table, there is so much blood, sweat, and tears in it! Once it was finally complete we purchased a large piece of tempered glass to cover the entire top and now we have this amazing show stopping table. I’m telling you, anyone with kids should go out and purchase a piece of tempered glass for their dining table. That thing is the easiest thing I own to clean! She can color and paint and destroy whatever she wants (she’s really into science experiments at the moment, which means we go through TONS of baking soda and citric acid AND paper towels. Seriously, even as I type this she is grabbing the food coloring from the baking cupboard for her next experiment. Phew, thank you glass dining table!) and it all just wipes right off!
This table sparked a fire inside me. I love shop time. I love being able to take a piece of wood that looks like it should be thrown on a bonfire and turning it into something incredibly beautiful and unique. The hobby blossomed into a little home based business. I started taking custom orders for clients, and started spending as much time as I could in the shop. I’ve built dining tables, coffee tables, bookcases, decorative items, barn doors, you name it, if it’s made from wood, I’ve either made it or it’s on my to-be-built list.
I’ve always enjoyed crafting. It’s something I get from my mother. She is Wonder Woman. I’m not kidding, I can’t even begin to find the words to describe my mom. I know everyone believes their mom is THE mom, but sorry, you’re all wrong. It’s my mom. My mom is THE mom. She is everything I hope to someday be (you know, when I grow up, and figure out what I want to do with my life and magically become an adult). She is probably the most creative person I have ever met. She can do anything, and is constantly learning new techniques and new crafts. I am blessed to have gotten that from her. I am always on Pinterest checking out new things I can make for our home, and to sell.
Wow, that turned into a novel. Sorry! And I really didn’t even discuss that much! Maybe I should leave some for another day…I’ll try to pick up the pace a bit.
At the end of a rough day at the vet clinic I used to come home and type an imaginary article that would never be published anywhere. It was usually an article to do with responsible pet care, what happens in a vet clinic, pretty much anything, I just needed to write. It was my way of processing the day, my way of getting out my thoughts and feelings that I couldn’t express any other way. So it seemed logical that I start a blog. I am going to post tutorials on the crafts and woodworking I do and would also like to use you all as my motivation to get my butt in gear and get into the best shape of my life. I know these 2 things aren’t related but crafting and fitness are both part of who I am. I have been overweight my entire life and have dedicated this year of rediscovery to also finding the inner fit me. I have taken up running again and although it is slow going to start, I am starting a running streak (thanks Charlotte, my amazing coach, and friend, who is currently #streaking1mileatatime and has encouraged me to do the same). From today forward I will be recording my miles, keep an eye out for #streaking1mileatatime and keep track of where I’m at! Feel free to send me a message and kick my butt if you don’t hear anything about working out or running for a few days! I’m counting on you all to keep me focused!
I grew up being a rough and tumble farm girl and in the last 10 years or so blossomed into an uber-girl. I love anything pink, anything girly, anything to do with health and beauty. I’m going to be posting some product reviews along the way of health and beauty products that I use or come across (thank you Fabfitfun!). I have started a youtube channel, and although I will be posting some crafting tutorials on there, it will likely be primarily videos of me being a girly girl!
If any of you come across something you think I would be interested on, please, pass it along. Anything crafty, girly, or fitness related I am totally into and would be happy to post a tutorial or review of!
